GAZE Frederick "Ric"

Compiled by Gordon Freegard based on research by Merilyn Stewart

Frederick known as “Ric” was born c1892 at North Adelaide, South Australia. His father was Frederick Owen Gaze. Ric was farming at the family property of ‘Yarrawee’ at Gnowangerup at the time of enlistment. He was a single man aged 23 years, 5 foot 10 and three quarter inches tall, with a fresh complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. He enlisted in Perth on 21 October 1915. Ric gave his next of kin as his father Frederick who was living at Claremont. On enlistment he was ranked as Sergeant, and became a Lieutenant during his service in WWI. He was awarded the Military Cross and bar for gallantry.
Ric married Helen (known as Nell) and they had two children – Barbara and William. Ric was an Honorary Captain at the time of his enlistment in the VDC during WWII and was the Commanding Officer and worked very hard in the formation and training of the unit. He was Vice President of the Agricultural Society and belonged to several rural associations. On Sunday February 16 1941, Ric was badly injured in an accident at his home. Over the next few weeks the VDC Unit including the band marched up to the Gnowangerup hospital in an effort to raise Ric’s spirits. Unfortunately Ric passed away 6 weeks later on 3 April 1941.
